Quarters for Erin Routliffe at Australian Open

Sunday, 21 January 2024

A huge win for Erin Routliffe and Canadian Gaby Dabrowski in the third round of the Australian Open.

The fourth seeds are through to the quarterfinals after beating the Chinese pair of Hanyu Guo and Xinyu Jiang on Margaret Court Arena 4-6 6-1 6-3.

But it wasn't smooth sailing in the match which took 1hour 40minutes, in fact Dabrowski was broken to love in the first game.

The New Zealand - Canadian combination fought their way back breaking their opponents twice, but the keyed up Chinese pair were too good in the first set.

However the second set saw the US Open champions break serve in the fourth game to take the initiative and break again as Routliffe served out the set.

In the final set there was an early exchange of serves and breaks, but Routliffe and Dabrowski held their nerve in the seventh game for a service break and never let go.

For Routliffe it was great to reach the last eight.

"We've played them before so we knew it was going to be really hard. We kept to our plan and served well," said ninth ranked Routliffe.

"It's great to be in the quarters and play on the big courts, although today it was a little slower than the outside courts we'd played on."

They will face either left-handed eighth seeds Beatriz Haddad Maia (Brazil) and American Taylor Townsend or Spaniard Christina Bucsa and Alexandra Panova (Russia) who play Monday afternoon.
