Venus wins in Estoril and Routliffe advances in Madrid

It’s been a great day for the Kiwis on the ATP and WTA Tour.

Michael Venus and his British partner this week Jamie Murray have so far lived up to their billing at the ATP 250 event in Estoril.

They have advanced to the semi-finals after a 6-4 6-4 win in one hour and 18 minutes over Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Kazakhstan’s Aleksandr Nedovyesov.

Meanwhile Erin Routliffe and her Polish partner Alicja Rosolska have started well at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. They have beaten the Japanese pair of Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya 6-2 6-4 in an hour and 16 minutes and will face top seeds Aussie Storm Sanders and China’s Shuai Zhang in the second round.

Routliffe is projected to climb a spot to a career high ranking of 32.

Rubin Statham is through to the semi finals at the ITF tournament in n Chiang Rai in Thailand. New Zealand’s top singles player has beaten 8th seed Ryota Tanuma from Japan 6-7 (5) 7-6 (2) 6-3 in two hours and 33 minutes. He will face another Japanese player, Takuto Niki for a place in the final.

Paige Hourigan has lost in the quarter finals at an ITF tournament in Monastir in Tunisia. The New Zealand number one ranked women’s player has been beaten 6-1 6-4 by China’s Meiling Wang in an hour and 22 minutes.

Hourigan and doubles partner Valeria Savinykh are through to the double’s final after a 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 win over the Japanese pair of Himeno Sakatsume and Sakura Hosogi.
