Venus and Puetz beaten at Indian Wells

Monday, 14 March 2022

It’s been a disappointing day at the office for Michael Venus and his German partner Tim Puetz at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. The 6th seeded pair have been beaten in straight sets by Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas and veteran Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

Both pairs were in form having won ATP 500 tournaments in Dubai and Acapulco respectively and Venus had indicated before the match this would be a tricky assignment. And so it proved with Tsitsipas and Lopez prevailing 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 11 minutes.

Venus struggled on serve in the opening set and was broken in his first service game and also serving to stay in it at 4-5 where he served a double fault to hand a break point to Tsitsipas and Lopez, and then another double fault on deciding point to lose the set.

Puetz then double faulted to lose serve in his second service game of the second set and from there Tsitsipas and Lopez cruised through to the quarter finals. Venus and Puetz will now head to next week’s Master’s 1000 tournament in Miami.
