Lulu Sun powers into Jingshan semifinals without dropping a set
Lulu Sun still hasn’t dropped a set on her way to the semifinals of the WTA 125 tournament in Jingshan, China.
The Kiwi No 1 defeated Russia’s Elena Pridankina in the quarterfinals on Friday, winning 6-2 6-4.
The match lasted 76 minutes, with Sun breaking her opponent’s serve five times over the match.
Sun’s serve was less dominant than it had been in previous matches in the Eastern China city, getting just 48 per cent of her first serves in and winning 48 per cent of the points on her second serve.
However, there’s more than one way to win a match for the 24-year-old and she was able to beat Pridankina by outplaying her in the rallies and she won 63 of the match’s 109 points.
The win will also help Sun climb up the rankings and she is expected to move up to around 138 in the world, even if she loses her next match.
That will be against top seed Alexandra Eala from the Philippines, who is regarded as one of the next big stars in the sport.
The 20-year-old Eala, defeated Clara Tauson at the US Open recently, while she also reached the final at Eastbourne just before Wimbledon.
