Share Administrator Role

In line with modernising our approach to managing clubs and providing a more professional service to participants, we took a look at clubs that operated with the support of a paid manager or administrator.

By gathering facts and understanding from tennis clubs, along with other sport codes, both in New Zealand and internationally, we initiated a Shared Administration Pilot involving four clubs in the Tennis Northern Region.

On the strength of research and the success of the pilot we encourage clubs to consider the options this programme will bring to their operations and participation.

Watch the video below to hear directly from the clubs how successful the initiative was!

shared admin programme

To modernise our approach to managing and growing our sport we need to rethink our existing model. Consider who works on the governance, operations, management and marketing of your club.  Is it a small core of committee volunteers or efficient people trained to do the job quickly and effectively?

In a large percentage of clubs, it is the former that default to old systems and traditional ways.  Someone with the skill set required to manage and market clubs, could get through the work in a professional manner in half the time with a plan in place for succession.

Committee members could stick to the governance roles that take less of their time, players would receive up to date information and funding & sponsorship could be part of a prudent financial plan. Supporting the cost of a manager or administrator is often perceived as unaffordable, especially by smaller clubs, however sharing the cost between 2 or more clubs makes it an achievable option.

This is the rationale behind the Shared Administration Programme, whereby clubs can engage an administrator to undertake generic administrative tasks for a portion of the week to allow them to run in a more professional manner offering the services today’s participants require.

There are a few steps to work through to ensure your club has all the facts and relevant information when considering a change from voluntary operations. An indication of these steps can be found HERE

Four clubs in the Tennis Northern Region took part in the initial Shared Administration Pilot.  A review of the progress at each of the club, and jointly, took place each quarter for the first year of the programme.  Summary of feedback HERE
