Tennis NZ High Performance Spring Update

Thursday, 14 December 2023

October and November have been a busy couple of months for the HP team as they look to increase coach support at tournaments and frequency of junior national camps.

COACH SUPPORT - TOUR EVENTS

The spring months saw three tours running simultaneously, providing coach support for athletes across all ages.

Clint Packer was contracted to support four players (Rubin Statham, Ajeet Rai, Alex Klintcharov and Monique Barry) competing at two ATP Challengers and ITF Women’s $60k events in Sydney and Adelaide.

We also ran two ITF junior tours to Asia with seven kiwis competing throughout Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam across different levels of ITF Junior tournaments. The following junior players attended:

Junior players (Private coach)

Aishi Das (Chris Canady)

Harry Pugh (John Gardiner)

Lev Gorb (Jarrad Bunt -KDV)

Jack Hansen Ratter (Andrew Falck)

Zac Wu (Dwayne Cleugh

Audrey Tran (Neil Carter)

Dallas King Ehau (US based)

NATIONAL CAMPS

13U Camp Pic

Either side of this we have just finished our first round of National camps as part of the selection process for our international team events. First up was the 15U Camp for Junior Billie Jean King and Junior Davis Cup in October and 13U Camp for the 14U Boys and Girls World Junior Team events. This saw a total of 32 players come to Albany tennis centre for intensive training weeks pushing each other daily. Players also received valuable data on their physical fitness and movement competency through fitness testing and physiotherapy screenings.

GRAND SLAM DEV PROGRAMME

Audrey Tran

November also saw successful applications for Alvin Na and Audrey Tran to attend a trip as part of the ITF Grand Slam Development Programme, which provides an opportunity to participate in the Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl events alongside a training camp with upcoming players from other nations.

PERFORMANCE COACHING

In the performance coach space, 30 coaches joined us in a webinar with leading S&C expert and long-time physical coach for Emma Raducanu, Gareth Shelbourne, talking all things long term athlete development and fitness training for elite juniors.

In the past fortnight the Tennis NZ coaches were in Christchurch observing all the juniors compete in Junior Nationals, followed by the pro tour events in Wellington and Papamoa before the ASB wildcard playoff to end the year.
